EY Global Tax Platform
Head of Product Design · +40% Revenue
EY’s Global Tax Platform is a cutting edge enterprise tax compliance system used by multinational corporations to manage complex financial reporting and regulatory obligations. As Head of Product Design I simplified large scale tax compliance through intelligent automation, structured workflows and collaboration tools. I led the end to end design of a Corporate Tax Compliance module, a Financial Statements module, and a machine learning powered transaction classification tool, and built a scalable design system that standardised EY’s digital tax ecosystem.
The challenge
- Users juggled spreadsheets, PDFs and siloed tools to manage financial statements and corporate tax filings.
- Large transactional data sets created cognitive overload, with teams struggling to track, interpret and act on the data.
- There was no unified way to comment, chat or track changes across teams, and manual transaction classification was slow and error prone.
Research & discovery
- Interviewed EY tax professionals, financial analysts and auditors to uncover inefficiencies.
- Ran heuristic analysis of existing tax tools and benchmarked enterprise finance and tax SaaS products.
- Tested iteratively with EY internal teams and external corporate clients. Key insight: professionals needed structured, task driven workflows, progressive disclosure for large data sets, and deep audit trails.
Corporate Tax Compliance module
Problem. Enterprise tax teams lacked a streamlined way to manage compliance filings.
A structured, step by step module that automates complex workflows: guided Gather, Analyse, Review and Submit actions, a dynamic taxation builder that auto adjusts to jurisdiction and tax category, and automated calculations that validate input against financial records.
- 30% Fewer tax filing errors: Automated validation and structured workflows guided users through compliance steps, with audit trails flagging errors in real time.
- 20% Faster submissions: Automated calculations, pre filled templates and role based approvals streamlined the process.
- £3M Revenue impact in costs saved: Fewer errors and automation let tax professionals service more clients in the same time.
Financial Statements module
Problem. Preparing and reviewing financial statements across multiple entities was cumbersome.
A dedicated module with template driven reports on regulatory standards, inline commenting and collaboration on specific line items, and automated reconciliation that matches ledger data against reported tax values.
- 40% More accurate statements: Real time validation, automated reconciliation and inline collaboration reduced misstatements.
EY design system and principles
Problem. Inconsistent UI patterns across EY’s tax products.
A scalable design system standardising typography, buttons, tables, modals and accessibility, with reusable components, accessibility compliance, and scalability for future modules.
- 50% Faster design to development: Reusable components and design tokens removed redundant work and unified the experience across products.
Machine learning transaction classification
Problem. Manual transaction sorting was time consuming and error prone.
An AI powered classification system with automated tagging of deductible versus non deductible expenses, a self learning model that improves with feedback, and bulk classification of thousands of transactions at once.
- 70% Less manual classification: The model categorised transactions from historical data and processed thousands instantly.
- 30% Better classification accuracy: The self learning model refined predictions against expert verified labels.
Task management, files and audit logging
A task driven system with role based assignments and reminders, an integrated file drive and chat to centralise discussions, and a deep audit logging system with version history and timestamped, legal grade transparency.
- 35% Fewer missed deadlines
- 40% Less email dependency
- 50% Faster internal audits
Outcomes
- £3M Revenue impact in costs saved
- 50% Faster design to development
- 70% Less manual classification
- 30% Fewer filing errors
Structured workflows, a scalable design system and machine learning automation transformed how EY’s global teams handle enterprise tax compliance.
