Boeing set out to reduce its carbon emissions footprint using real time data, predictive analytics and UX driven reporting. As Lead Product Designer I designed an intuitive platform that helped internal teams monitor, analyse and act on emissions data, focused on transparency, usability and automation.
The challenge
- Emissions data was highly technical and difficult for non specialists to interpret.
- Existing tools lacked real time tracking, delaying sustainability initiatives.
- Reports showed emissions without clear next steps, and teams needed visual proof to justify sustainability investment.
Research & discovery
- Interviewed aerospace engineers, sustainability officers and flight operations teams to uncover pain points.
- Benchmarked aviation sustainability platforms and worked closely with data scientists to simplify complex emissions models into digestible insights.
- Ran low fidelity prototype tests. Key insight: decision makers needed predictive insight, not just historical data, and different stakeholders needed customisable views.
Data visualisation and interaction
Interactive charts that filter emissions by aircraft model, route and fuel type, and a CO2 savings simulation showing how small operational changes, such as adjusted flight altitudes, reduce emissions.
Personalised dashboards and compliance
Custom views for engineers, pilots and sustainability teams, automated CO2 reports aligned with CORSIA and ICAO regulations, and a low light view for cockpit and engineering use.
